Grill Tank Tips

How do I know if my tank is empty?

There is really only one reliable way to tell if your tank is full or empty and that is to weigh it. An empty 20lb tank will weigh around 18-20 lbs. A full tank will weigh somewhere between 38-40 lbs. The biggest problem with weighing a tank is that you must disconnect it from the grill. The best way to ensure you never run out of propane is to always have a full spare tank. Most grillers will never check their tank until they run out.

How long does a grill tank last?

The answer to this question is a bit more than a simple time frame. A 20lb cylinder can last indefinitely as long as it is kept in good condition. The federal government requires that a new cylinder be inspected after 12 years of service and every 5 years thereafter. The inspection is visual, but does include checking for leaks and excessive rust/corrosion. After inspection, a new date is stamped on the tank collar and will be good for 5 additional years.

My Grill Flame is very small?

Sometimes people say that they are experiencing a small flame or no flame at all when their tank is full and turned on. Many times this is caused by opening the valve too quickly. All OPD valves are equipped with an excess flow control in case of a hose breakage. To correct this problem, close the valve handle and turn off all burners on the grill. After waiting approximately 15 seconds slowly open the valve handle carefully not to let too much gas flow at once. This process should keep the valve from closing due to excess flow of gas.
